Blog 8 Brooks or Graham ?
Who’s article will stick with me? Which will I
remember forever? David Brooks or Barbra Graham? I would have to say Barbara
Graham “Confessions of a Quit addict” even though David Brooks has quite a few
good points in his article “It’s Not About You” like “Most successful young
people don’t look inside and then plan a life. They look outside and find a
problem which summons their life”. And “The purpose in life is not to
find yourself it’s to lose yourself” I feel like I would remember Barbara and what
she went through every time I feel like quitting or giving up. Thinking of her
story will motivate me to keep trying for myself and for the ones I love
because if she could go from being homeless “We found ourselves living in a
rusty old man on the outskirts of Rome” to a successful single mother with her
essay published in a College textbook “So I did what any self respecting
jobaholick would do I became a writer” It’s hard to change your life for the
better especially if all you’ve ever known was “The rush of cutting loose” and
if Barbara can turn her life around like that who’s to say I can’t accomplish
half of what she has? I must say I have taken advice from David’s article. I
feel like overall he is saying that we don’t need to listen to the baby boomers
we need to do what we need to do as adults and tie ourselves down to the
responsibilities that we have. I don’t think he is saying to not chase your
dreams. He’s just saying that we need to follow our dreams to certain extent.
Like a reality check, bills won’t get paid by us following our dreams. Towards
the end of Barbara’s article I think she realized that she had a son she had to
provide for and finally realized that traveling the world. going from job to
job and having no support system would not be what’s best for her and her son.
She came back to reality and became a conformist. Everyone has that one person
they look up to, whether its their mom, a famous person or just someone they
admire. But for me, after reading this article I have found someone new too
admire. It takes a strong person to succeed in life no matter their goal but it
takes even a stronger person to fail over and over again and yet keep striving
until they finally get to that point in their life where they are happy with
themselves. I want to be like Barbra, I don’t necessarily want to go through
what she went through but I want to have the will to keep going even when life
isn’t going my way like she did. Maybe one day ill have an article in a
textbook that students can learn from, who knows, but I will never stop trying
to be the best that I can and do the best that I can do.
I think Barbara Graham can relate to us younger adults to think twice before quitting things in life. Reading her article opens our minds to way we can understand her and see the picture of what she is telling us. Very interesting article to read and good quotes.
ReplyDeleteI really like that you added some quotes from the article and that I do agree with you about how Barbra can relate to the younger generation about realizing the mistakes we made and to try to get better.
ReplyDeleteGreat attitude! You should strive to always do your best in whatever you are doing. Even if you start off on the wrong foot like Barbara Graham, you can always change and better yourself.
ReplyDeleteI certainly enjoyed reading "after reading this article I have found someone new too admire. It takes a strong person to succeed in life no matter their goal but it takes even a stronger person to fail over and over again and yet keep striving until they finally get to that point in their life where they are happy with themselves." I will make sure to apply that to my personal life.
