A Scenario For College Students
Out of the two articles “Library Visit, Then Held At Gunpoint” and “Building Attention Span” I feel that “Library Visit, Then Held At Gunpoint” stood out to me the most because I could understand exactly where Mr. Charles Blow was coming from. We both agree on the fact that the officer went about the situation the wrong way. Charles said “why was a gun drawn first? Why was he not immediately told why he was being detained? Why not ask for an ID first?’ in my opinion he shouldn’t have puled the gun out without asking for an ID, just because of some ones appearance, especially in society today. Kids tend to follow trends, so if the trend is jeans, converses and big t shirts then that what you see on the majority of youth. I understand why the officer thought it was the suspect because he fit the description but as an officer on a college campus he should’ve assessed the situation differently.
Not only do I agree with Mr. Charles, I particularly like his vocabulary and the atmosphere he creates while writing this article. He gets his point across more effectively and I can feel his emotion with just words he used, for instance, when he says that he is “exceedingly happy”. He could of used “really happy “ or “ very happy “ but by using the word “exceedingly” It helped me to get a better understanding of how happy he really is to speak to his son.
I would recommend this article to all college students. Incase they are ever in a situation like this they will know that cooperating will lead to the best outcome. I would also urge all students to carry an ID on their bodies at all time. If this ever happens, which I’m sure it will, maybe the officer will actually ask for the ID first and there wont be any problems. If not everyone should understand its important to follow an officers orders even if they are in the wrong, it keeps you safe.
